More than 800 tons of garbage, 40 tons of bulky waste and 480 tons of recycling waste were collected by Thessaloniki Municipality teams in two days as part of a city cleanup operation.
During the holidays, apparently, the city was “littered to capacity.” According to thestival.gr, from January 2 to the evening of January 3, 877 tons of garbage were collected. Utility workers collected bulk items (furniture) from 342 points in the city, which were transported to the waste processing plant by 321 trucks, and 21 more forklifts were needed to clear the city streets of rubbish.
Apparently, Thessalonians are following the example of the Italians. A world-famous Italian New Year’s tradition is throwing furniture out of windows onto the streets. And, by the way, not only furniture, but also dishes, utensils, clothes and other unnecessary things. Italians firmly believe that there will be no happiness in the new year if you do not get rid of unnecessary trash.
Thank God that at least they didn’t throw it out of the windows, but simply took it out onto the sidewalk, near the trash cans.
