Queen Margrethe II of Denmark announced her abdication. After her departure, Crown Prince Frederik, her eldest son, will become king.
This came as a surprise to the Danes – they expected her to remain on the throne for the rest of her life. The official abdication will take place on January 14, the day that marks the 52nd year of the reign of 83-year-old Queen Margrethe II. She stated:
“I will leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik.”
Margrethe II is the longest-reigning monarch in Danish history, having ascended to the throne following the death of her father King Frederik IX in 1952. In a departure from British royal tradition, there will be no official coronation ceremony for 55-year-old Crown Prince Frederick. Instead, the palace will announce his accession to the throne, writes Air Force.
