“Crime and Punishment” in Kalyvia: a man tortured his wife and children every day

The words of the mother of a 16-year-old boy who killed his father Yiannis Karahalios with two knives outside his home in Kalyvia to end the daily torture to which they were subjected by a beast in human form are shocking.

“One day we had a fight and he beat me black and blue. He told me, ‘I’ll bury you in a ditch.’ He tore my clothes off and the kids saw me running home naked and screaming at him to leave me alone. I then reported this to the police station. He told me: “Did you go and turn me in?” He wanted everyone to have their own way, so that no one would object to him and sit locked up at home,” says the woman.

Let us note that, according to ELAS, Yiannis Karahalios was also involved in human trafficking, bringing women from eastern countries, whom he sold after raping them. “He raped me when I was 11 years old,” says a witness in the case. So far, six people have testified in the case, including a woman who said she was sexually abused by Yiannis Karahalios when she was 11 years old.

The 71-year-old man had a criminal record for assault, the police report said.

“He locked me in a closet without water or food,” says the 16-year-old parricide. PThe teenager vividly described what life was like in the same house with his father: “He tormented us, abused us for many years, – these were his first words. – I wanted to leave home, but my mother could not bring us all together. I don’t know how many times I stabbed him. I think he said, “Why are you killing me?” He went down the stairs, and I continued to strike him. The night before I ran away from home, and this greatly offended him. I knew that when he returned, he would make me suffer, just as he had done before. All these years I saw only beatings. He locked me in a closet without water or food.”.

His mother and brother confirmed his words, saying that he was constantly subjected to physical and verbal abuse. According to the juvenile offender, his father called him on Friday evening, the night of the murder. He was with his mother and brother. He again called them names and made derogatory remarks about them.

“What I did was wrong. I regret this action. But I feel relieved, I am liberated. Now my family and I are no longer afraid.” – he told the investigator and prosecutor and added: “Since I managed to come this far after everything I went through, I’m happy.”

With the consent of the prosecutor and the investigator, the teenager was released without restrictions, and a bailiff was appointed to supervise his behavior, as provided for juvenile defendants.
