M. Schinas: "Each country that does not accept illegal immigrants will pay 20 thousand euros per person, and they will remain in the country of entry"

Margaritis Schinas: “Each country that does not accept illegal immigrants will give 20 thousand euros per person, and they will remain in the country of entry.” This provision includes the Pact on Migration and Asylum.

European Commission Deputy President Margaritis Schinas gave an interview to ERT and journalist Georgios Kouvaras, revealing shocking details about the migration and asylum pact that was concluded on Wednesday between member states EU.

“It has taken three years to reach an agreement, from the day we made a formal proposal for a new pact in September 2020. But it has taken Europe decades to finally be able to develop a comprehensive, normative, agreed framework for migration. For many years we have tried, but they were never successful”– emphasized Margaritis Schinas.

“And this morning we have this new structure, adopted, legislated, and it brings with it two very important innovations. The first is that it establishes a new control procedure on the external perimeter of the European Union. We call it screening, according to which Everyone arriving at Europe’s external border will be subject to security checks. Within five days they will undergo security checks, they will be identified, their personal details will be checked and whether they are entitled to asylum protection in the European Union, only if so the right exists. He will go through the system, and if not, he will come back.”Schinas explained.

“The second community is a procedure of solidarity. For the first time, a powerful legal system of solidarity for migrants is being introduced. This system will provide the set of solidarity that is necessary,” – he explained to the ERT journalist.

“For example, if we have a massive influx of population, then in the solidarity mix there will be a very strong element of resettlement. If, as was the case in Evros, there was an attempt to penetrate, and it is necessary to strengthen the border, then in this case solidarity will provide border guards, provide funds, will ensure the presence of a European service at the border, – emphasized the vice-president of the commission. – If some European countries do not agree to resettle asylum seekers, they will pay money, according to the pact.”.

Regarding how the size of their financial contribution will be determined, Schinas said that “There will be no way to evade this obligation. 20,000 euro “fine” per person for each member state that does not ensure solidarity.”

Schinas, speaking about the amendment, which gives work and residence permits to migrants who have stayed in Greece for at least 3 years, said that it “perfectly compatible with the social directions we give in Europe.”

“I am not worried (about the rise of the far right) for a very simple reason: because elections are strength for Europe. We are not afraid of elections in Europe. We are Europe precisely because we are a union of democracies. We register all political forces, we allow everyone manifestations of political discourse are expressed in our systems, but in the end we are all working on common European soil”concluded Schinas, answering a question about the French government’s disagreements over immigration.
