The European Parliament, the Council and the Commission have reached a political agreement on Pact on Immigration and Asylum after overnight consultations.
However, the previous position remains unchanged: “Member States at their external borders must control illegal immigration.” In short, the onus will once again fall on Greece, which only yesterday voted in favor of legalization of illegal immigrants.
This means that in the future there will be “more possibilities” for the arrival of new illegal immigrants, who will be legalized provided that they have “certain characteristics”!

Moreover, for “internal” countries EU the right is reserved select from among foreigners those who are considered to be of “higher quality”, leaving the rest in Greece. The text of the agreement mentions the following provisions:
“The new rules will make the European asylum system more efficient and strengthen solidarity between member states, allowing the burden to be eased in those member states where the largest number of migrants arrive.”
It seems that yesterday’s vote in support of the famous bill and today’s agreement in Brussels are linked. The Council and the European Parliament agreed on reform aimed at improving the EU’s immigration and asylum system, an achievement was made “political agreement on the five packages of the new EU Pact on Immigration and Asylum”announced the Spanish Presidency of the EU.

Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, said in a post on Platform X: “20 December 2023 will go down in history. The EU has reached a landmark agreement on a new set of rules for managing migration and asylum.”
“Migration is a European challenge that requires European solutions,” which the pact can provide, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized in a statement after the announcement of the political agreement. She notes that “member states at our external borders must control illegal immigration”and explains that “The Immigration and Asylum Pact will provide an effective European response to this European challenge.”

Ursula von der Leyen also notes that “Europeans will decide who comes to the EU and who can stay, not human traffickers”, adding that the pact means protecting those who need it. At the same time, she adds that he will provide “Member States should share their efforts responsibly, showing solidarity with those who protect our external borders while preventing illegal immigration into the EU.”
Pact “will give the EU and its Member States the tools to respond quickly in crisis situations where Member States are faced with large numbers of migrants arriving illegally or instrumentalization where hostile countries deliberately try to destabilize the EU or its Member States”, – emphasizes Ursula von der Leyen, while stating that, thanks to new data, the commission is supporting Member States with concrete, operational measures to solve pressing problems.
It should be noted that yesterday, with the adoption of an amendment by the Ministry of Immigration to legalize thousands of illegal immigrants, the “Greece of the Greeks” finally ended, and it was confirmed that the differences within the New Democracy were only theoretical. Only Antonis Samaras from the party “New Democracy” voted against the bill he announced, but his opposition turned out to be “poor”, as it was not enough to change the fate of the vote.
