Not 30,000, not 40,000, not 50,000, but 500 000 Pakistanis will come to Greece to work, according to Pakistani minister Jawad Sohrab, in charge of Pakistanis living abroad.
The Pakistani minister shared a post on Platform X depicting his meeting with Adonis Georgiadis and wrote the following, verbatim:
My meeting with the Greek Labour Minister @AdonisGeorgiadi was extremely productive in exploring strong collaborations. We're focused on fulfilling Greece's need for 500,000 skilled workers, particularly in construction. InShaAllah in the coming days we will sign a G2G agreement… pic.twitter.com/OmD9zqqYjL

“My meeting with the Greek Minister of Labor @AdonisGeorgiadi was extremely productive in terms of finding strong partnerships. We are focused on meeting Greece’s need for 500,000 skilled workers, especially in the construction sector. InshaAllah (God willing) we will sign a G2G agreement with Greece, which will open up huge employment opportunities for our Pakistanis in Greece.”
The link to “construction sector”since the government has so far claimed that the bill concerns 30,000 foreigners who will work in agricultural work because (as they say) “Greeks don’t work”.
It is worth noting that just yesterday, the Greek Minister of Labor Adonis Georgiadis, in a message on the “X” platform, where he answers user questions, statedthat the three countries with which interstate agreements are almost ready are Georgia, India and Moldova.
Το Πακιστάν δεν είναι σε αυτές pic.twitter.com/TSxBfswG7G

He states in detail in his post: “Many people ask me which countries we are negotiating transnational labor import agreements with: Georgia, India and Moldova, followed by the Philippines, Vietnam and Armenia. Pakistan is not among them.”
There are many explanations for why ministers “confused”. Adonis Georgiadis, for the needs of the Mitsotakis government, is trying to suppress the right-wing disagreement with the bill, and the Pakistani minister, for his part, wants “sell” jobs of their own audience. What is certain is that 30,000 is far from 500,000, and there is no mention of jobs in agriculture and the agro-industrial complex.
However, as they say, the worst is the beginning. The Greek authorities do not have accurate data on the number of Pakistani citizens living in the country. Official data says 60 thousandthese are mainly legalized migrants, but according to various NGOs, their number has long exceeded 200 thousand people and, naturally, the difference between the two numbers is illegal immigrants.
