A second car thief has been arrested in connection with a tragic crash involving a dead police officer.

On Tuesday, another “fugitive” was arrested in the Perama area after being involved in a chase that ended in a crash in which a 29-year-old policeman was killed on the Athens-Corinth highway in Aspropyrgos.

A 20-year-old man, the first of three to be behind the wheel of the stolen cars, was arrested at the scene and with his help police identified two of his three accomplices. According to reports, the second person arrested is the 17-year-old cousin of the arrested “racer.” The teenager was discovered and arrested in Perama early in the morning by members of the Piraeus Security Directorate. The investigation continues to establish the identity of the third criminal and gang members.

According to police, four criminals formed a gang that systematically stole cars. Between Sunday evening (12/17) and early Monday morning (12/18), they stole four vehicles from Perama and Nikea.

Trying to escape, they were spotted by police from the motorcycle patrol of the ΔΙ.ΑΣ rapid response group. and developed excessive speed, making dangerous maneuvers, thereby endangering the lives of other road users.

Subsequently, on Athenon Avenue in the direction of Aspropyrgos, approximately at the 14th km of the Athens – Corinth national road, the young man lost control of the stolen car and collided with another driven by his accomplice, as a result of which he was immobilized and arrested after colliding with a median barrier , and the other car with the driver fled.

The motorcycle of the ΔΙ.ΑΣ. team following this car, trying to avoid a collision, crashed into a police car. As a result, the motorcycle driver was fatally injured and his passenger was seriously injured. At the same time, the crew of the patrol car was slightly injured, and the official vehicle was damaged.
