Crete. The agony of a 17-year-old student who suffered allergic shock: “She has brain damage”

The 17-year-old schoolgirl, who suffered cardiac arrest after allergic shock, is still in critical condition in the intensive care unit of Venizelion Hospital in Heraklion.

A high school student in Attica, who suffered cardiac arrest following an allergic shock, is facing the most difficult battle of her life. The girl was allergic to dairy products, and on Sunday, while having breakfast at a hotel during a school trip, she consumed butter.

The girl remains intubated, and doctors who managed to stabilize her condition assess it as extremely critical, but they cannot assess progress until the extensive swelling of the brain subsides.

“The girl is intubated and is in a condition that is stabilized in terms of vital signs. But the brain shows signs, both clinical and imaging, that it was severely affected by anoxemia after cardiac arrest.” – said the director of the hospital’s intensive care unit, Venizelio Anestis Kioulpalis, to the child’s parents, who arrived from Athens to Crete on Sunday evening and are being kept informed of all developments by doctors, hoping that their girl will cope with her health problems.

She had a cardiac arrest

Preliminary investigations conducted by the Malevizi Police Station revealed that the girl had eaten butter and was allergic to dairy products. Although she injected herself with the adrenaline she had with her, the allergic reaction was severe and she went into cardiac arrest.

“We have had no information from the child or the accompanying teachers and we are very sorry, we are shocked. From what the children are saying, she was eating butter and bread in the breakfast area.”

The doctor and emergency personnel who rushed to the scene did their best to help her, but the girl was taken to Venizelio in cardiac arrest. It took 10 minutes for the intensive care unit doctors to revive her, after which she was transferred, intubated, to the intensive care unit.

“We didn’t have any information about her allergies.”
As the owner of the hotel where the girl stayed with her classmates and teacher-companions told Creta24, the hotel did not have any information about the products to which she is allergic, either from herself or from the teachers.

“We have had no information from the child or the accompanying teachers, and we are very sorry, we are shocked. From what the children say, she ate butter and bread in the place where they had breakfast.”

A few minutes after the girl finished her breakfast at 10:30 a.m., according to the hotel owner, two students ran to the front desk in a panic, saying their friend had fainted. About fifteen minutes later, at 10:45, according to the owner, an ambulance arrived, gave her first aid and took her to Venizelio Hospital in Heraklion, as she had suffered cardiac arrest.

Doctor’s testimony
Shortly after 8:00 pm on Sunday, the hospital released a medical report on the student, which stated the following:

“Today, Sunday 12/10/2023, a minor 17-year-old student with cardiac arrest (asystole) was admitted to the intensive care unit of our hospital by ambulance, accompanied by a doctor. She was intubated and after 10 minutes of specialized resuscitation, her heart rhythm was restored. “Blood pressure was maintained with vasoconstrictor medications and she underwent the necessary tests. He was transferred to the hospital’s intensive care unit for stabilization and hospitalization. Her health condition remains extremely critical.”
