Thessaloniki: what the 37-year-old owner of the dogs that mauled a 50-year-old woman said

The 37-year-old owner of three dogs that attacked and fatally injured a 50-year-old woman in Neochoruda in Thessaloniki on Sunday afternoon appeared before the prosecutor on December 11.

A case of manslaughter by negligence was opened against the man, who was arrested a few hours after the tragic incident, and an administrative fine was imposed. During the day, the results of the autopsy are expected, which will be performed on the body of the unfortunate woman.

The dogs’ owner reportedly told police he was shocked by the tragic incident and that he had three large dogs as “guardians” at his home.

Horrible incident occurred at approximately 2:30 pm on Sunday afternoon in the Neochoruda area.

Three dogs escaped from the supervision of their owner, burst into the courtyard of the house where the deceased lived and attacked the unfortunate woman, who was doing gardening work at the time.

More than 50 bite marks all over the body

More than 50 bite wounds were found on the victim’s body, most of which were located on the limbs, especially the arms. It is noteworthy that, as competent sources note, a similar picture is rarely found in victims of animal attacks, with wounds in some cases exceeding three centimeters.

The most likely cause of death is a bite that literally tore out part of her inner thigh, severing her femoral artery. The woman died from severe bleeding within 2-3 minutes.

Three ambulances arrived at the scene and rescuers pronounced her dead. After the incident, the police arrested the owner of the dogs and began an investigation into the incident. Witnesses to the incident say that the dogs attacked the woman in the presence of her minor son.

“They were completely wild dogs.”

According to the president of the local Neochorouda community, Christos Saramurtsidis, the entire area was shocked by the tragic incident, and the unfortunate woman was a mother of two children and a very active person whom most residents knew. In the last elections she was a candidate for city council along with Petros Atamian.

Talking about the tragic incident, the community president said that the unfortunate woman “I was working in my yard, mowing grass and trimming trees with the crew. We learned that at some point she went out to collect branches and was attacked by dogs from a neighboring house. We don’t know whether they jumped over the fence or found an open gate and entered the yard. (It later became known that the dogs broke through the mesh separating the areas. Editor’s note).

The victim’s friend told how the dogs managed to get to the woman’s house: “The dogs, according to the residents themselves, are domestic, but feral. They lived in the stable, and he brought them here because he lives at home alone, and immigrants attacked his house and robbed it. They got them to protect the land and the house, and that’s how they escaped.”

The ex-husband of the deceased woman, in an interview with ERT, said that this is not the first time that dogs run away from their owners and chase people: “The dogs ran away from a neighbor, three huge, wild dogs. They entered the yard and killed her. Three ambulances arrived, performed artificial respiration, but did not save her. The dogs ran away from the house many times and chased people many times, this is not the first time, when they attacked…”

The deceased woman was a very outgoing person who loved to give back and help others, and was well loved in the small community of Oreokastro and beyond. In the last post she made on her personal Facebook account, just hours before her tragic death, she wrote:
