How much money do tourists leave in Greece? What countries do they come from and how long do they stay at their destination? Representatives of the Bank of Greece (BoG) answer these questions by publishing data for 2023.
In the traditional European markets of Greek tourism (UK, Germany, France) and the USA, in 2023 there was a significant increase in key indicators (arrivals, overnight stays, income) compared to 2022.
Average travel expenses showed a decrease of 3.5% (2023 – 570.7 euros, 2022 – 591.7 euros), as well as the average length of stay, decreased by 11.2% and amounted to 6.5 nights ( 2022 – 7.4 nights).
The total number of overnight stays in 2023 showed an increase of 7.3% and amounted to 236,271.2 thousand (2022 – 220,213.1 thousand overnight stays).
Travel revenues in 2023 amounted to €20,593.6 million, up 16.5% compared to 2022. This is due to an 11.6% increase in financial receipts from residents of the EU-27 countries, the amount of which amounted to 11,169.7 million euros (54.2% of all receipts). It is also noted that there was an 18.3% increase in financial receipts from residents of other countries (EUR 8,576.6 million).
In particular, receipts from residents of the eurozone countries in 2023 amounted to 9,065.7 million euros, showing an increase of 12.5% compared to the previous year, while receipts from residents of countries EU-27 outside the euro area amounted to EUR 2,104.0 million, an increase of 8.0%.
Regarding the most important countries of origin of travelers:
- the number of tourists from Germany increased by 9.7% (they left 3571.3 million euros in Greece),
- the number of tourists from France increased by 11.6% (they left 1425.4 million euros in Greece).
From other countries:
- the number of tourists from the UK increased by 5.3% (left 3294.4 million euros in Greece),
- the number of tourists from the USA increased by 14.4% (they left 1373.6 million euros in Greece),
- the number of tourists from Russia decreased by 21.7% (they left 32.4 million euros in Greece).
According to experts, in 2024 Greek tourism is heading for new records. A number of business sectors are expecting significant increases in revenues and financial results as they are directly or indirectly linked to tourism activities.
According to leading players in Greek tourism, in 2024, a new significant increase in tourism receipts will be recorded, both due to an increase in the number of arrivals and due to rising prices for accommodation.
