Taylor Swift: Time Magazine Person of the Year

On Wednesday (12/06), Time magazine named little-known European American pop superstar Taylor Swift as Person of the Year, describing her music as “the hero of her own story.” Taylor Swift beat Putin, Xi Jinping, Zelensky and even… Barbie.

According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), quoted in its report by France 24, Time magazine editor-in-chief Sam Jacobs wrote the following in a statement: “Taylor Swift has found a way to cross boundaries and become a source of light. Swift is that rare person who is both the author and hero of her own story.”

It also emphasizes that “much of what Taylor Swift has accomplished in 2023 is unmeasurable”and adds: “She wrote about her journey and shared the results with the world. She took it upon herself to validate the dreams, feelings and experiences of people, especially women, who felt unrecognized and regularly undervalued.”

Large-scale release of Taylor Swift’s film “Tour of eras” with a budget of $92.8 million, set the tone for the song this year “Cruel Summer”. Advance ticket sales for the film have exceeded $100 million worldwide, theater operator AMC announced, making it the highest-grossing concert feature film in history.

Additionally, Taylor Swift’s romance with Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce sparked a new wave of NFL fans as hundreds of millions of fans followed her new partner on social media.

This year, Taylor Swift won in all nine categories in which she was nominated at the 2023 MTV VMAs, including Artist of the Year, Video of the Year and Song of the Year.

In this regard, Sam Jacobs stated the following: “For building her own world in which there was a place for many, for turning her story into a world legend, for bringing joy to a society that was desperate needs her, Taylor Swift – Person of the Year 2023.”

Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” currently includes more than 145 dates. Each show generates $13 million in revenue, bringing the tour’s total to about $1.9 billion, according to performing arts magazine Pollstar. No artist or group has ever crossed the symbolic $1 billion mark before.

Taylor Swift was born in Pennsylvania and began writing country songs with a guitar in her early teens. Her father moved his job in financial services to the country capital of Nashville to give her a chance in the music industry. Having gained popularity with her introspective country songs, Taylor Swift turned to a decidedly pop direction with her fifth studio album, 1989, named after the year she was born.

PS If you don’t want to be the person of the year and don’t want to give the title to a geopolitical opponent, nominate a singer as the winner!
