Speed ​​limits on roads due to… “climate change”

On the occasion of… “climate change” Europe must change much of what it currently does on its roads. Indeed, in addition to the millions of internal combustion vehicles that must be phased out in the next few years, speed limits!

In particular, it is expected that transport ministers of countries EU will make decisions to reduce pollution levels, which is expected to lead to lower speed limits, although this is relative since modern new highways require them to be increased. In EU countries, speed limits are set by national laws and may vary between member states.

Typically, speed limits vary by road type and region. For example, in residential areas the limits are usually around 50 kilometers per hour, while on motorways and autobahns they can reach 100-130 kilometers per hour. In some countries, such as Germany, there are sections of the autobahn where there is no standard speed limit, although there is a “recommended” speed of 130 kilometers per hour. Other countries such as Estonia and Cyprus have lower speed limits than the EU average.

In the European road community, the debate about speed on motorways is taking on new dimensions. In Italy, discussions are ending on increasing speed limits to 150 km/h, and in the Czech Republic, following the recent passage of legislation, the speed limit on motorways is now 150 km/h.

In Greece the debate has officially begun as there are now roads with grotesquely reduced limits, including high limits in places where they shouldn’t be… It is proposed to increase them in some places on motorways, for example on the long straight new motorways (Olympia Odos, Egeo, Morea, Egnatia Odos and even Attica Odos), and reduce, for example, inside cities. Naturally with appropriate adaptation to weather conditions.

That is, the limit on a section of the motorway of 150 km/h should be reduced to 100 in the case of wet road surfaces. There is no doubt that within a year decisions will be made for the territory of Greece. Maximum speed limits in the EU:

• Czech Republic: 150 km/h
• Denmark: 130 km/h
• Estonia: 110 km/h (summer), 90 km/h (winter)
• Finland: 120 km/h (summer), 100 km/h (winter)
• France: 130 km/h (summer), 110 km/h (rain)
• Germany: On some sections of the autobahn there is no maximum speed limit, but the recommended speed is 130 km/h.
• Greece: 130 km/h
• Hungary: 130 km/h
• Ireland: 120 km/h
• Italy: 130 km/h
• Latvia: 110 km/h
• Lithuania: 130 km/h
• Luxembourg: 130 km/h
• Malta: 80 km/h
• Netherlands: 130 km/h (in some areas the speed may be reduced to 100 km/h)
• Poland: 140 km/h
• Portugal: 120 km/h
• Romania: 130 km/h
• Slovakia: 130 km/h
• Slovenia: 130 km/h
• Spain: 120 km/h
• Sweden: 120 km/h

Fines:

1. An administrative fine of 40 euros should be imposed on anyone exceeding the speed limit of 20 km/h.
2. For speeding over 20 km/h, an administrative fine of one hundred (100.00) euros is imposed.
3. For exceeding the speed limit above 30 km/h, as well as for vehicles traveling on motorways at speeds exceeding 150 km/h, on motorways at speeds exceeding 130 km/h and on the rest of the road network at speeds exceeding 150 km/h . 120 km/h, a fine of three hundred and fifty (350.00) euros and immediate confiscation of the driver’s license of the person attesting the violation for sixty (60) days in accordance with the conditions and procedures specified in article 103 of this traffic regulation. A person driving below the minimum speed limit and violating the provisions of paragraph 9 of this article shall be fined eighty (80.00) euros.
