A British couple hit the million dollar lottery jackpot, but… almost lost it

A British couple became millionaires after winning the lottery. However, the cunning seller almost pocketed their winnings.

How tells The Sun, Fred and Maureen Holt from Greater Manchester bought two EuroMillions tickets back in 2012, planning to go to Spain. They were checked at a store in Watersheddings, where the seller said they had not won anything, although an invitation to contact the lottery organizers was displayed on his computer. He even offered to return the “unlucky ticket” to them, hoping to pocket it.

“She gave the ticket away and bought a few more tickets for good luck for the next week. She left and didn’t think about anything else.”

As soon as the woman left the store, its owner called the Camelot lottery organizer and demanded money. But they failed to deceive. Detective Constable Kate Carnally, of Greater Manchester Police, said: “To deceive an elderly woman and try to claim the money for herself was both callous and underhanded.”

And a Camelot spokesman said: “The National Lottery’s success is built on the trust of its players and Mr Nizar’s sentence is clear evidence that Camelot will never allow that trust to be undermined.”

Farrah Nizzar pleaded guilty at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester. Only now, finally, the seller of lottery tickets was found guilty of fraud and he will spend the next thirty months behind bars.

And the happy owners of a million can finally forget about the thorny path to getting money, legal burdens and the dishonesty of some individuals. The couple said: “We are pleased that justice has been served and this matter is now behind us. We can now look forward to enjoying our victory and spending time with family and friends.”
