Not just in China: Denmark, France and the Netherlands report soaring cases of pneumonia in children

An outbreak of pneumonia in children caused by the bacterium Mycoplasma pneumoniae has been recorded in France, Denmark, the Netherlands and the US state of Ohio.

How writes CNN, Other U.S. states show no signs of a dramatic increase in mycoplasma cases, but the bacterium typically causes outbreaks of pneumonia every one to three years. The United States hasn’t seen a true wave of the virus since the coronavirus pandemic, so experts are not surprised and predict a similar increase this year.

A week ago, European experts who conduct epidemiological surveillance of mycoplasma in 45 centers in 24 countries reported that the incidence, which dropped to 1% during the pandemic at the beginning of the year, began to rise again. The report, published in The Lancet Microbe, found that by the summer and fall of this year, average growth had more than quadrupled, with larger increases occurring in Asia and Europe.

Respiratory mycoplasmosis causes damage to the lungs and can cause damage to the pleura. The main symptoms of the disease are a cough that lasts for weeks, fever, headache, and sometimes a rash on the chest, back or arms.

Previously, our publication reported that in Chinese hospitals there are long queues among children outbreak of pneumonia recorded – no cough, but with high fever and nodules in the lungs. According to local media, an increase in the number of cases was recorded back in September, it was reported by the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China. However, the outbreak of respiratory diseases at that time was explained by the lifting of anti-Covid restrictions and seasonal flu. So far, experts are finding it difficult to name the reason for the current increase in the incidence of pneumonia.

Children’s hospitals across the country, including in the capital, are overcrowded. In emergency departments, children with fevers face waits of two or more hours to be seen. Among the symptoms, doctors call chills and high fever, and many develop nodules in the lungs. As a treatment, doctors give small patients intravenous drips.
