Skrekas for Black Friday: fine for everyone who "plays" with prices – we fixed them before the sale

“We are saying that offers and discounts should be real, not misleading or virtual, so as not to deceive consumers,” said Development Minister Kostas Skrekas today (11/22/2023), in the midst of Black Friday.

“During the entire previous period, ΔΙΜΕΑ collected prices, which we will compare after Black Friday with prices before this period, and if there are grounds, fines will be imposed,” added Kostas Skrekas in an interview with journalists from the Σκαι TV channel. He emphasized that “the August fines had an effect – Tocontrol reduces prices on store shelves.”

Speaking about the measures taken by the Greek government to combat rising prices for goods, the effectiveness of control and the application of fines, Mr. Skrekas noted that the fight against speculators continues, and the initiative “Constantly reducing prices” brings significant results that are visible on store shelves.

“Prices for those goods for which inspections have shown a problem have already been reduced. We are waiting for the rest of the companies to do this – if they do not do this, then in one or two months we will repeat the inspections,” Mr. Skrekas said and confirmed that the Ministry of Development in no way seeks to limit proposals, as is deliberately distorted by the opposition.

Speaking about the measures that were taken to solve the problem of rising prices, the minister said: “We have moved on to checks for unjustified price increases. However, the rise in prices lies not only in markups on the part of traders, but also in objective conditions, such as the increase in the cost of raw materials, which We’re watching now.”

“We continue to impose fines on all companies that try to commit indecent acts. Greece is the only country in Europe that has a law on ill-gotten gains and enforces it. We have imposed fines on 4 multinationals, and the first of them reduced prices by 25 %. The amount of fines exceeds 8 million euros, and 5.5 million have already been collected,” he added.

“We have an initiative to constantly reduce prices. We had a goal of 500 products, now 890 have joined it. Products with a special label must have a constantly reduced price for at least 6 months compared to the previous period. Many chains are offering the same price so that the consumer knows about it.”

“Rising prices are the number one problem that worries society, this is a complex issue, this is a European issue, I am not saying this as an excuse,” he said.

PS I just want to say to Mr. Skrekas: “Okay, if only I could drink honey with your lips.” The problem is that, despite the efforts of the authorities, prices continue to rise. And measures like the “500 list” (890) or promoted at the beginning of the year “Housewife’s Basket” They don’t help much. And it’s difficult to blame suppliers for this, because the minister pointed out along the way the real reason is the increase in prices for raw materials, which occurred after the start of sanctions against Russia and the amounts that the European Union spent to support Ukraine. And war, according to Louis 12 Valois, is “money, money and more money.”
