Russians protest against Finland’s closure of the border with Russia (video)

The Russian community in Finland came out to protest against the closure of checkpoints on the border with the Russian Federation.

How writes Euronews, hundreds of Russians living in Finland came out to protest in Helsinki. They gathered near the parliament building to express their attitude towards the authorities’ decision. People say they support Finland’s commitment to safety, but are concerned that even those legally allowed to enter the country will now find themselves in a difficult situation. Vera Ponamoreva, who lives in Helsinki, says:

“In fact, I feel cut off from my family. And I’m very worried, they are also very afraid. Everyone remembers, even I remember what the Iron Curtain is, and this is a situation that is very scary to return to.”

Let us remind you that on the night of Saturday November 18th Finland has completely closed 4 main southern checkpoints, and during the day another one, “Vartius”, where 60 asylum seekers arrived. Earlier, Ursula von der Leyen, head of the European Commission, thanked the Finnish authorities for protecting European borders.

Several crossing points in the north remain open, but are much more difficult to access, and only two accept applications from asylum seekers. Finland threatens to completely close its eastern border and deny asylum if the migration situation does not change. She accuses Russia of sending illegal migrants to the border and claims it is the Kremlin’s revenge for Finland’s sharp turn towards NATO. Moscow strongly denies the accusations.
