The Economist: 70,000 military personnel died as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine

The Economist magazine, citing data from American officials, claims that at least 70 thousand Ukrainian soldiers died during the full-scale invasion of the Russian army in Ukraine:

“American officials estimate that at least 70,000 Ukrainian soldiers died in the war, and up to 120,000 were wounded.”

Edition notesthat the war turned the lives of Ukrainians upside down and changed the labor market. While men are at war, women undertake to do their work. About 4.8 million people lost their jobs almost overnight when the Russian Federation attacked Ukraine. In the spring of 2022, the unemployment rate reached more than 30%; in October 2023 it dropped to 18.4%, but remains significantly higher than the pre-war level. More than 17% of Ukrainian workers have changed professions since the beginning of the war, and hundreds of thousands were called up for military service.

In August, The New York Times reported, as our publication wrote, that the total number of wounded and killed military personnel on both sides, Ukraine and Russia, over the course of a year and a half of war is estimated at almost 500 thousand, including 70 thousand dead Ukrainians. Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Alexey Danilov then denied information that the death toll had reached this figure.

In October, British intelligence appreciated, that Russia’s losses in dead and seriously wounded amount to up to 190 thousand military personnel, and taking into account the wounded who will return to the battlefield after recovery – up to 290 thousand people. Greek edition of CNN Greece wrote, citing data from American officials that on the Russian side the total number of losses is 300 thousand. Of these, 120 thousand were killed, 170-180 thousand were wounded.
