Long queues at Athens International Airport


At noon on Thursday, chaos erupted at Athens’ Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport after passport control machines stopped working. Passengers formed very long queues, and at times there was tension between them and the staff.

Passport control machines at points of arrival and for travelers from countries included in the Schengen zone have stopped working. According to the state broadcaster ERTseveral machines for checking European passports in the arrivals area were out of order, leading to long queues and inconvenience for many passengers.

Of about ten control machines, only three were working, ERT reported.


Let us remind you that in accordance with security rules, there must be one police officer at the passport control machines. However, the state broadcaster reported that only three of them were operational.

The problem was resolved after a few hours, but there was no official explanation as to why passport control was understaffed.
