Eleven deputies from the far-right Spartans party have been summoned by the Supreme Court prosecutor to give explanations as suspects of possible involvement in fraud in this year’s legislative elections.
A request has already been sent to parliament to lift their immunity. As noted in the prosecutor’s document addressed to the Speaker of Parliament, despite officially belonging to the Spartans (“Σπαρτιατών”) party under the leadership of Vasilis Stygas, they apparently received support and direct guidance from Ilias Kasidiaris, the former deputy leader of the far-right party.” Golden Dawn”, currently serving a prison sentence.
The prosecutor’s document reportedly highlights that “the above-mentioned individuals actually used the Spartans party as a front for the new political structure under the leadership of Ilias Kasidiaris, thereby helping him to circumvent the restrictions imposed by the electoral legislation.”
Let us recall that it was the party leader Vasilis Stygas who exposed the connections of his deputies with Kasidiaris and, soon after the elections, also testified to the investigative authorities.
In the June elections, the Spartiates party received 4.68% of the votes and 12 seats in parliament. The party currently holds 11 seats as several MPs quit over disagreements with Stygas, accusing him of treason.
Undoubtedly, it was the support of Kassidiaris that influenced not only the party, but also the name of its leader, which was unknown to the general public before the parliamentary elections. The Supreme Court never explained what the violation of the law was…
