Wolves harass residents of Thessaloniki suburbs

Residents of the suburbs of Vasilika and Epanomi in Thessaloniki have been living in horror lately, as after the wild boars,… wolves appeared in their city. Wild animals – wolves, wild boars and foxes – are looking for food from people, since forests have suffered enormous damage in recent years, and predators are starving.

Thus, a wolf attack on a dog was recently recorded, and over the past three years more than 200 attacks on hunting dogs have been recorded. “Recently, incidents of wolves appearing in residential areas have become more frequent, especially in the eastern part of Thessaloniki, but also in the western part of the city. Cases of large numbers of wolves have been recorded, – said the vice-president of the Epanomi hunting club Georgiy Rigas.- In the last ten days we have had wolf attacks in Vasilika and one in Epanomi. Two hunting dogs died in Vasilik, one was saved by a hunter. In Epanomi, a man heard his dogs barking and 30-40 meters away he saw a wolf fighting with his dog. The wolf was already holding her by the scruff of the neck with his teeth. When the forest predator saw the man, he unclenched his teeth and ran away. The dog is fine.”

“We ask the state to take action, because they create a problem not only for hunters, but also for farmers. Mountain agriculture and livestock farming are in disrepair, wild boars have become much more numerous, they are already entering cities, where they are losing out in the conflict with wolves,” – says G. Rigas.

The Athens News constantly reports about wild animals that come out to people in search of food, and these stories do not always end peacefully. At the same time, until now the biggest problems have been with bears, but wolves on the streets of Greek cities are already too much…
