Houses and shops are flooded by the strong hurricane that hit Patras on Tuesday evening, October 17.
Dozens of requests for assistance were received by the fire service while citizens tried to bail out water from the premises themselves. A large volume of water flooded even the center of the Achaean capital, and especially Riga Fereu and Gerokostopoulou.
The authorities of the city of Patras were called upon to immediately take up the relevant work (call the utility workers) and help cope with the flooding in shops located on the streets of Othonos Amalias, Iron Polytechniou and others.
First responders began to act according to the regulations, providing assistance where it was needed.
Scientists say such heavy downpours are a symptom of climate change: a warmer atmosphere acts like a massive sponge, capable of absorbing more water vapor and then squeezing it out in intense jets that can easily overcome outdated flood defense systems. “In general, as we know, this change in weather patterns is a result of climate change,” said Rohit Aggarwala, an international climate scientist. “And the sad reality is that our climate is changing faster than our infrastructure can respond“.
