Severe floods in the previous period caused a big “wound” for Larisa’s fish traders, as people are afraid to eat fish after contaminated waters (including cadaveric poison from dead animals) entered the sea.
Traders sell fish and seafood from areas outside Thessaly, such as Chalkidiki or Kavala, but their orders are now lower than usual due to reduced market traffic.
According to onlarissa.gr, Mr. Christos Samaras, manager of the central fish store in Larissa, “People have been asking since day one if they can eat fish. However, the majority shows confidence, despite claims from some groups that fish shops should be closed” When asked when the situation will change and consumers will return to the market, Mr. Samaras noted that “it is a matter of time, and what happened will be forgotten.”

Vendors selling fish at street markets in Larissa face a similar problem; they are even forced to throw it away as consumers avoid buying it.
