A 7-year-old boy asked to go to school… in girl’s clothes, but was refused

A seven-year-old student at a school in Attica asked to go to class in girls’ clothes. Among other things, he asked to be allowed to use the women’s restroom because he “didn’t feel like a boy.”

The child’s mother’s request and statement that “this must be respected by those around him,” was received with hostility by the leadership of the educational institution. Besides father a child who is divorced from his wife, also with them agree.

“As a mother, I must satisfy the wishes of my child. I never told him “you’re a boy” or “you’re a girl.” My role is to accept his choices and how he wants to see himself. He is a man and has his rights. No one should tell him how to be happy. If he doesn’t feel like a boy, then he is and needs to be fixed.. I believe that he can demand that others accept him the way he sees and feels,” says the child’s mother, speaking on the television program “Πρωινό.”

The situation was commented on by the family’s lawyer, Foivos Strugaris, who noted that “the mother strongly supports the child’s wishes, while the father is extremely negative. The couple is divorced, and they have created two opposing camps.”

At the same time, the child’s father is concerned about the developments and notes that the steps taken by his son’s mother could harm the child, who only when he grows up will make his own choices. “I love my son. And I am willing to respect his choice if it were shaped by his personal judgment and not by the brainwashing of his mother, fashion, or the opinion of anyone else in his wider circle, or television or the Internet. With age, he will be able to make his own choices. But now that he still just a child, it is my responsibility to protect him from an unconscious (externally imposed) choice. “I don’t want him to be subjected to ridicule and bullying at school, which will hurt his fragile psyche and can subsequently haunt him throughout his life as psychological problems or complexes,” the father said.

The unusual case was also commented on by psychiatrist Dimitris Papadimitriades, who explained: “At the age of 7, children are in the first stages of understanding their gender identity (belonging to one sex or another). Children of this age are characterized by exploratory behavior associated with gender expression, which may include different clothing preferences (including “unisex”).

This is part of personality development, and is not an indicator of “something terrible.” “Children develop gender identity as they grow,” the psychiatrist said. “It is necessary to respect the child’s attempts to ‘explore life’. It is important for parents and educators to provide a supportive and supportive environment. Parents, who are the cornerstone of a child’s emotional development, and whose love and acceptance are important to the child’s overall well-being, including in adulthood, should support his “exploratory mood.” So the mother’s intention to support the child is commendable. We understand that this requires a safe and favorable environment,” he emphasized.

Talking about disagreements between two parents, the psychiatrist said: “We cannot say anything definitively, I do not know them personally. I don’t know whether they are driven by their personal emotions (hatred, struggle for “primacy/leading role” in a couple) or a true need to care for your child. I can only say one thing with confidence: professional support is recommended for children experiencing persistent gender discomfort in their environment. A specialist must conduct an inspection and give competent recommendations.”
