Traffic police reported 53 thousand violations in just two weeks

Greece’s traffic police have finally received orders to carry out intensive road safety checks and curb chaos on the country’s streets. In just two weeks, more than 250,000 inspections were carried out, recording thousands of dangerous violations.

Speeding, dangerous maneuvers, using a mobile phone while driving, violating red lights, and illegal parking are the most frequently recorded offenses by the traffic police in the first two weeks of October 2023.

These traffic violations account for 57% of the total number of offenses.

In total, during the period from October 1 to October 14, 2023, 230,848 checks of drivers and vehicles were carried out and 53,884 violations were confirmed.

Violations by region:

• 12,284 – in Attica,
• 9,514 in Thessaloniki,
• 4,353 in Western Greece,
• 3,926 in Central Macedonia,
• 3,829 in Crete,
• 3,473 in Thessaly,
• 3,239 in Peloponnese,
• 3,087 in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace,
• 3,016 in Central Greece,
• 2,693 in Epirus,
• 1,277 in the South Aegean Sea,
• 1,191 – in the Ionian Islands,
• 1,163 in the North Aegean and
• 839 in Western Macedonia.

Violations:

• 17.290 – for illegal parking,
• 11.112 – for speeding,
• 3.934 for driving without a driver’s license,
• 2,779 – for failure to use a protective helmet,
• 1,977 – for not fastening a seat belt,
• 1,348 for KTEO,
• 894 – for drunk driving,
• 787 – for uninsured cars,
• 714 – for using a mobile phone,
• 613 for noise pollution,
• 582 – for signal violation,
• 342 for driving in oncoming traffic,
• 266 for abnormal maneuvers,
• 177 for worn tires,
• 171 for failure to maintain a safe distance,
• 161 for illegal overtaking,
• 104 for exhaust gases,
• 95 for oncoming traffic on a one-way street,
• 91 for distracting the driver’s attention,
• 69 for exceeding cargo dimensions,
• 53 for violating a traffic light signal,
• 42 for violation of priority,
• 37 – for driving not on the right edge of the road,
• 35 – for failure to use child seats,
• 17 – for lack of a seat belt,
• 14 – for improper use of lighting devices,
• 7 – for driving in the left lane,
• 1 for violation of pedestrian priority at a crossing
• 9,147 other violations.

According to the Ministry of Citizen Protection, control will continue with the same intensity in the next period, as part of the implementation of the road safety plan announced by the Ministry and the rest of the Greek police.

Coastal Highway Racing

During the week from 2 to 15 October 2023, in the area of ​​the Athens-Sounio coastal road, targeted actions and specialized checks of the Attica Road Directorate were carried out daily in order to combat impromptu racing, as well as other dangerous violations that lead to accidents, cause noise pollution, violate the safety of transport, the unhindered and safe movement of citizens.

In total, 843 checks of drivers and vehicles were carried out, 640 violations were confirmed, for which appropriate administrative fines were imposed, and one person was detained.

Violations recorded on the Athens-Sounio highway:

• 150 – for speeding,
• 89 – for lack of a helmet,
• 43 – for using a mobile phone,
• 42 – for violation of noise regulations,
• 36 – for failure to use a seat belt,
• 27 – for driving through a red light,
• 19 for deprivation of a driver’s license,
• 9 for non-standard maneuvers,
• 9 for drunk driving,
• 7 for demonstrating skills,
• 4 for impromptu races
• 205 for other violations.

In addition, the traffic police seized 27 license plates, 208 driver’s licenses, 113 driver’s licenses, 15 vehicles, and one person was arrested, reports the news site in.gr.

Control will continue with the same intensity in other areas of Attica where there is an increase in traffic violations.

PS The behavior of motorists and motorcyclists has long been beyond the control of the police.

The main violations: driving “on a brick”, parking on the sidewalks and high speed – since the beginning of the year, at least in Athens, where I live, there have been practically no traffic police. Let’s hope that this time the controls and fines are permanent, and not just a gesture of “good intentions” three months after the appointment of a new minister who just wants to show that he cares.
