“What have we done to them?” ask Gaza civilians, many of whom are left homeless.
In response to the Hamas attack, Israel imposed a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip – there is a shortage of food, water and medicine. As a result of the shelling, many people were left without homes.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza will soon become unmanageable, said Fabrizio Carboni, a senior official of the International Committee of the Red Cross: fuel is running out, there is virtually no electricity, access to drinking water is difficult. Life goes on amidst rubble and long queues.
Israel cut off all supplies in response to the Hamas attack. Providing power to the few operating businesses has become a major challenge as hospitals are given priority. Amid food shortages, long lines are forming for bread.
Israeli bombings are destroying more than just Hamas-linked infrastructure. Many homes and businesses were completely destroyed. Entrepreneur Hassan Zidane says:
“What have we done to them? Look at the destroyed houses. No one notified us. We are civilians. What have we done to them? Every time we build something, they destroy it. What have we done to them? We want to be like everyone else people, to have freedom of movement, not war every year.”
According to the Palestinian side, the death toll exceeded 1,350 people. The number of wounded goes into the thousands. A group of independent UN experts, condemning the crimes of Hamas in Israel, said that retaliatory strikes on the Gaza Strip are tantamount to collective punishment, writes Euronews.
