The Greeks are changing their eating habits: they switched from meat to bread


Inflation changed the eating habits of the Greeks. In particular, significant changes in the Greek diet over the past decade demonstrate survey by the Consumer Goods Retail Research Institute (IELKA).

According to the study, food spending in 2022 amounted to 1,825 euros (per capita), which is 5.8% less than in 2009, the year before the first financial crisis.

Relative to 2021 total grocery spending increased by 3.10%which, according to IELKA, is associated with the combination rising prices and reduction in purchases and households. According to these data, total spending on products in 2022 will be 20.28 billion euros (compared to 22.10 billion euros in 2009).

This amount only includes the costs of Greek consumers. And this applies not only to food, but also to other products such as office supplies and pet products. Also taken into account:

  • consumables (office supplies),
  • baby milk,
  • cosmetics,
  • tobacco products, etc.

The study records changes in per capita cash spending by category during the period 2009-2022, as well as changes in purchases and consumption. In particular, the figures for monthly cash expenses show:

  • increased costs for the purchase of basic sources of carbohydrates (for bread and bakery products) by 12%.
  • reduction in spending on protein sources (estimated reduction in beef by 18%, lamb and goat by 40%),
  • reduction in costs for dairy products (approximately fresh milk with a 30% discount),
  • reduction in olive oil costs by 17%,
  • reduction in costs for fruits 7%, for vegetables 43%,
  • increased consumption of legumes by 44% and nuts by 48%.

There was a 9% decrease in spending on soft drinks, but an increase in spending on alcoholic drinks reached 68%. Data on monthly consumption of food quantities is also interesting.

In particular, a stable trend is recorded for the main sources of carbohydrates: monthly average per capita consumption of bread and bakery products decreases by 6% (about 4 kg per month).

There was also a reduction in consumption of major animal proteins by approximately 16%, with a decrease of approximately 1 kg of meat per month. The exception is poultry farming, which is seeing growth as it is the most cost-effective solution.

Noted increasing purchases of plant proteins and especially legumes. At the same time, a decrease in dairy products and especially fresh milk was recorded by 41%, with the exception of low-fat milk and eggs, a decrease in olive oil consumption by approximately 30%, withreducing consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables by approximately 15% (1 kg reduction per month).

In addition, it is observed reduction in soft drink consumption (about 1 liter of soft drinks per month per capita) and increase in alcohol consumption.

Regarding the average price paid by a consumer in 2022 compared to 2009, according to the study, the largest increase was recorded in nuts – by 61%, salad – by 64% and coffee – by 54%, A greatest decrease recorded in such products as canned milk (-18%), mineral water (-30%) and poultry meat (-4%).
