Municipal elections: polling stations await more than 9.5 million Greek citizens

22,722 polling stations across Greece are now fully prepared for Sunday’s municipal elections on October 8. Citizens will elect new municipal and regional administrations. Find out where and how you can exercise your right to vote.

The sites will open at 07:00 and close at 19:00. If there are no clear winners, the election process will be repeated next Sunday, October 15th.

Citizens who have reached the age of 17, that is, those born before December 31, 2006 and included in the voter list of the relevant municipality, have the right to vote. The number of voters is 9,775,181 people – 4,743,059 men and 5,032,122 women. Of these, 465,218 citizens (237,164 men, 228,054 women) will vote for the first time.

The right to participate in the elections are 17,957 citizens of other Member States of the European Union who do not have Greek citizenship but reside in Greece, who have reached the age of 17 and are registered in the special electoral rolls of the municipality of their place of residence.

The special electoral lists for non-citizens, emigrants, seamen and prisoners, which apply to parliamentary elections, European elections and referendums, do not apply to local government elections. This means that voters can only exercise their right to vote in those municipalities in whose voter lists they are registered.

To find out where you can exercise your right to choose, go to Ministry of Internal Affairs application Greece “Find out where you vote.” By filling out the fields “Last Name”, “First Name”, “Father’s Name”, “Year of Birth”, “Mother’s Name” (optional) or only “Last Name” and “Special Election Number”, you will receive information about your polling station.

The Greek Ministry of Internal Affairs has also activated a call center at 2131361500 with the ability to handle 30 simultaneous calls; it is open daily from 08:00 to 20:00. Those interested can also contact local citizen service centers and municipalities.

Voters can vote after confirming their identity with one of the following documents: police identification card (physical or digital), passport, driving license or individual health card of all insurance funds issued by the competent Greek authorities. If personal information has changed (for example, name change due to marriage/divorce), voters must provide appropriate supporting documentation. Military and security forces use their official identification cards.

In connection with the elections, ID and passport issuing points at local police stations are open on weekends, Saturday-Sunday, and relevant municipal services (such as the registry office and the municipal status department) are also open to inform the public and issue ID cards.
