The European Union could expand from 27 to 36 member countries

The European Union has begun discussing changes that need to be made to expand the alliance to 36 countries.

About it tells publication “EUROPEYSKAYA Pravda”, referring to the announcement by the Presidency of the Council EU Spain informal ministerial meeting. We are talking about the ministerial summit on September 28-29 in Murcia, which will be a preparatory stage for the meeting of the European political community, scheduled for October 5 in Granada, Spain. In both cases, one of the main issues will be EU enlargement. The announcement notes:

“The main focus of the informal ministerial meeting on the first day, Thursday 28 September, is the need to make internal preparations for the EU to have up to 36 member states, and to strengthen support for candidate countries.”

During the meeting, discussions are planned under the chairmanship of European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Oliver Várhelyi. They will focus on the impact of future enlargement on EU policy, the concept of gradual integration of candidate countries during the accession process, and the institutional reforms that the EU needs to be ready for enlargement.

During their working lunch, ministers will focus on preparing for the leaders’ meeting in Granada and discussing the concept of open strategic autonomy the following day, October 6.

The issue of reforming the alliance has sparked active discussions amid preparations for its expansion to include Eastern European and Western Balkan states. At the request of France and Germany, the most influential members of the European Union, twelve experts proposed a plan for structural reform of the union so that it is ready to accept new members in the future.

Earlier, the European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Oliver Várhelyi, supported the schedule proposed by Charles Michel, President of the European Council, for the admission of candidate countries to the EU until 2030.
