The first public opinion poll after Kasselakis’ victory in the election of SYRIZA leader

The first national opinion poll since Stefanos Kasselakis’ victory in the leadership of the main opposition party, the left-wing SYRIZA, was published on Wednesday evening.

The survey, conducted by Opinion Poll and commissioned by the Action24 TV channel, showed that the ruling New Democracy party is losing in the preferences of respondents, in which 35-year-old Greek from the diaspora Stefanos Kasselakis, who came from the United States “to save his compatriots in Greece,” did not made a special impression.

ND leads by 17.7%, but has lost more than 8% of its pre-election percentage, just over two months after being re-elected for another four years.

SYRIZA and PASOK also lost votes. Intention to vote for:

  • SYRIZA 14% [17,84%]
  • PASOK 10% [11,84%]
  • KKE 7.7% [7,69]

  • Spartans 2.9% [4,68]

  • NIKI 3.7% [3,70%]
  • 15% of respondents answered that they were “undecided.”

According to the poll, 47.2% said they were satisfied or somewhat satisfied with the election of Stefanos Kasselakis to the SYRIZA leadership, compared to 41.6% who said “no” and “rather not.”

However, the vast majority of respondents believe that SYRIZA will split as the polarization between the “old guard” of party functionaries (former ministers Ahtsioglu, Tsakalotos, Fylis, Skourletis) and the new guard (Kasselakis) with the old functionaries (also former ministers Pappas, Polakis, Tsipras) flares up every day, and these partisan attacks are broadcast by the mainstream media 24 hours a day.

68.5% of respondents said that after the election of Kasselakis, divisive tendencies may appear in SYRIZA.

As for Kasselakis’s PR “assault” with videos and messages that do not have any “leftist” or even political content, respondents, apparently, were not impressed.

To the question “how busy were you and did you follow the process of electing the new president of SYRIZA,” 66.2% of respondents answered “not at all” and “a little.”

The opinion poll was conducted on a national sample of 1,005 households between 21 and 26 September 2023, that is, after the first round of the SYRIZA leadership race, which Kasselakis won, and before Kasselakis’ victory was confirmed on 24 September.
