Prime Minister Mitsotakis congratulated the new leader of SYRIZA

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday congratulated Stefanos Kasselakis on becoming the new leader of the left-wing opposition SYRIZA.

Mitsotakis has invited Kasselakis to a meeting in the coming days, sources said.

Earlier on Monday, government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis expressed the hope that “a serious and authoritative opposition will emerge in the country, and SYRIZA will follow a more realistic path”: “Our interaction will remain political, and we look forward to the position of Mr. Kasselakis, hoping he will turn away from the toxicity.” Several ND ministers also posted congratulatory messages on social media, highlighting the “toxicity” of SYRIZA.

35-year-old Stefanos Kasselakis, a Greek expatriate in the United States, a former employee of Goldman Sachs and a person with connections in the US Democratic Party, without any political experience or knowledge, while being openly gay, unexpectedly found himself on the political scene of Greece and, at the instigation of his “patron” Alexis Tsipras, managed to win leadership in the historical party.

PS I see only one reason why the conservative ND is happy about Kasselakis’ victory: they are sure that he is an easy target who will provide Mitsotakis with power for another 8 years. However, most likely, Kyriakos Mitsotakis will still regret what happened. After all, he will have to “change his color” and become gay in order to compete with Kasselakis. And apparently, Mitsotakis doesn’t particularly like this decision. Don’t like it yet…
