Acropolis: Romanian tourist arrested for stealing a piece of marble

An unprecedented incident occurred on Tuesday morning, September 19, at the Acropolis. A Romanian tourist stole two pieces of marble from an archaeological site. And when he was detained, he stated that… he did not know that this was prohibited.

According to iefimerida.gr, it all started when the guardian of the archaeological site of the Acropolis noticed a tourist on the Holy Rock with his hand on the propylaea. Sensing something was wrong, she approached him and after examining her, she discovered that he was holding in his hands two pieces of marble from an archaeological excavation site. The man was immediately taken to the entrance of the facility, where he was met by a police officer.

The tourist, who was eventually arrested for aggravated theft and violation of the Law on the Protection of Cultural Heritage in General, allegedly told the police that he did not know about the illegality of his action and did not cause any damage to the monument, since the pieces of marble “were separated” from the column.

According to the information, the marble was confiscated and sent to the Antiquities Tax Office for archaeological evaluation. It is expected that today, as part of an automatic procedure, the arrested person will be taken to the Athens prosecutor’s office.
