Stefanos Kasselakis and Effie Ahtzioglu won the first round of elections for the leadership of the main opposition radical left party SYRIZA last Sunday, September 17.
With 99% of the votes counted, Stefanos Kasselakis leads with 45%, followed by Ahtzioglu (36.2%), Nikos Pappas (8.8%), Euclides Tsakalotos (8.7%) and Stefanos Tzoumakas (1.29%). The two finalists will advance to the second round of elections this coming Sunday, September 24, 2023, and the winner will depend on a “coalition” that will be created during the week between the finalists and Pappas, Tsaklotos and Tzoumakas.
“The first step has been taken to ensure that a progressive government appears in the country in the near future. The country needs one,” Kasselakis told reporters outside Syriza’s headquarters after winning the first round of elections. “We will all have to go back to the polls on Sunday, win and be able to prevail over a government that currently does not adequately represent the history of the people.” – he added.
For her part, Ahcioglu thanked voters for their massive participation and stated that the elections are next Sunday “will be decisive“.
“They will determine whether the struggle we are waging will be waged in political terms or not. The struggle on the real field, in parliament and in society… SYRIZA cannot navigate the murky waters of easy solutions. We have a responsibility to the Greek people for honesty “.
Let us recall that on September 17, 146,635 people took part in the voting, of which about 40,000 were new members. Due to the huge number of participants, which surprised even SYRIZA, the voting process had to be extended. It is worth noting that the majority of voters cast their votes for “fresh” candidates aged about 30 years.
