Two difficult months for the Greek Armed Forces: “drowned”, “exploded”, “burnt out”, confidential documents leaked

The government has experienced a difficult two months, but the armed forces have also experienced equally difficult days. The latest event is the helicopters that “sank” on the Thessalian plain. An event that, no matter how we view it, shows the tragic state of the Greek armed forces.

Tragic in itself, as the army helicopters (whether “useless” or not) were scuttled despite early forecasts of bad weather.

It is also tragic that they were recognized by the ΓΕΕΘΑ (General Staff) “useless and written off”although among them are the very expensive AH-64 Apache, and the Bell UH-1 Iroquois turned out to be not so… useless, since they were recently used in major exercises.

And after the Greek Defense Forces realized that they could not hide this fact, they issued a new statement in which they refuted their previous statement, saying that the helicopters were safely transferred to the 111th Combat Wing in Nea Anchialos – the same one burned down, without informing how the “useless” helicopters were transferred there. To support their statement, the General Staff also included several photographs of the helicopters, which were now dry.

It should be noted here that it is unknown what damage was caused to both the helicopters and the warehouses that existed at Stefanovicio.

Having mentioned the 111th Combat Wing, we must not forget about the explosions that occurred at the 111th Combat Wing in Nea Anchialos during the fires. At that time, civilians, seeing the “explosions” of Air Force bombs, thought that they were being transported to war-torn Ukraine. And then the military and the government tried to downplay the event by citing old bombs.

Hardalias accidentally revealed state secrets

At the same time, there were also mistakes with information leaks. First, former Deputy Defense Minister and current parliamentary candidate for the Attica region Nikos Hardalias was seen posing in front of a detailed map of the 873 AK fuel depot.

It is logical that numerous failures make one wonder whether there will be changes in the leadership of the armed forces, and not just the dismissal of commanders, as happened, for example, in the 111th combat wing.

Already in the past, Nikos Chardalias, for reasons related, of course, to the battle that he will wage for the Attica region, while there are reports of dissatisfaction in the Prime Minister’s administration with the leader Α/ΓΕΕΘΑ Konstantinos Floros.

For his part, Defense Minister Nikos Dendias tried to “absolve himself of blame” in advance, saying that the armed forces were ready to provide assistance earlier in bad weather conditions, but this was not requested by the civil defense (i.e. Vassilis Kikilias), who had already been fired from position held.
