Conclusion of ΕΔΕ on the murder of 36-year-old Antonis

As evidenced by ΕΔΕ (Ένορκης Διοικητικής Εξέτασης), the captain of the Blue Horizon was in no hurry to inform the coast guard about the “man overboard”, and then did not mention the connection of the incident with the actions of the ship’s crew.

According to the ΕΔΕ conclusion and the incident log of the central port authority of Piraeus, the captain of the Blue Horizon notified the coast guard four minutes late on the night of the tragedy. Chronology of events as writes CNN Greece looked like this:

At 21:09 the ship announces its readiness to sail, and at the same time Antonis is pushed into the sea by members of the ship’s crew.

At 21:12 the ship departs.

At 21:13, the ship’s captain informs the port authorities that there is a person overboard, but never mentions the involvement of his ship’s crew members.

At 9:15 p.m., passengers on the nearby ship Eliros alerted the coastguard and police.

At 21:40 Antonis is pulled dead from the sea.

At 21:42 the order was given to stop moving.

At 22:00 the order was given for the ship to return to the port of Piraeus.

What’s truly shocking is writes cretalive.gr that Antonis at 9:20 pm on September 5, half an hour before his death, sat in the chair of the ship. In other words, according to the passengers’ statements, he had already boarded the plane. For some reason he had to leave the ship for a while, and he ran back to board again. That’s why in the fatal video we see him running without a backpack in his hand.

The testimony of a policeman who, together with his wife, was on the Blue Horizon, heading to Heraklion, is instructive. According to him, he saw Antonis sitting in a chair. At some point, the policeman went out with his wife to the stern, waiting to sail. At 21:10 they noticed quarrel between the crew members and Antonis. At the third shock, Antonis fell into the sea, says a witness of what happened:

“The sailors did nothing, the ship left. There was no announcement over the loudspeakers. Passengers became agitated. There were screams, but nothing happened. After the young man fell into the sea, I saw half of his body come to the surface of the sea about 20 seconds after the fall.”

In hand ΕΛ.ΑΣ houses the Blue Horizon’s so-called “black box” voyage recording (VDR) system, which is installed on the ship’s bridge and contains conversations, VHF intercoms and other critical information. The data extraction, a process carried out in the presence of port officers and security specialists, is expected to “shed light” on key aspects of the horrific case that has shocked the whole of Greece.

Yesterday the funeral of Antonis Kariotis took place, the white coffin with his body arrived at the Holy Church of Evangelistria in Agios Nikolaos at about 12 o’clock, where the service was held. The devastated nine brothers and sisters of Antonis saw him off on his last journey, his son-in-law could not stand it and lost consciousness. He will be remembered as a man with a smile always shining on his lips, despite life’s adversities.
