Tragic death in the port of Piraeus: a man was not allowed on the ferry, and he drowned

In Piraeus, the captain and crew members of the ferry were arrested because of the tragic death of a drowned 36-year-old man – he was pushed off the ship.

Last night, September 5, a man tried to board the passenger ferry “BLUE HORIZON”, which was supposed to follow to Heraklion (Crete). The published video shows how the man runs up the ladder of the ship about to sail, but the crew members push him to the shore and do not allow him to pass.

The unfortunate man jumped onto the departing ship and drowned in the rushing stream of water. They took him out of the sea already dead.

The shocking testimony of an eyewitness to the tragedy, Ms. Frosso Tetrantonaki:

“The person was inside the ship and probably did not have a ticket. He was pushed by a guy in a white shirt, and then imperceptibly over his shoulders, I don’t know what it is … He made two or three attempts to get inside the ship. When the ladder began to leave, they continued to push it. They shouted: what are you doing, what are you doing? The man fell into the sea. And you did something stupid and threw him into the sea … You turn around on the spot, look coldly at the man in the sea, and at the moment when the whirlpool picks him up and draws him in, you turn around and say that we are leaving without making any effort . Throw him a life jacket. Say: stop the ship, the man has fallen, he is drowning, let’s save him. Nothing, as if nothing was happening, the ship started and swam.

Excited passengers watched what was happening, the woman continues to tell:

“After a while, he surfaced and immediately drowned. The sea sucked him in, the ferry sailed, and after a while we lost sight of him. I informed the port administration, and they returned us back. The crew reported that he jumped to catch up with the ship and sank on my own. But it’s not. I filed a formal complaint about the incident. They pushed the man into the sea and he drowned. They killed him.”

In connection with the incident, officers of the coast guard were arrested, the Central Port Authority of Piraeus launched a preliminary investigation. The captain, the flight attendant (αξιωματικός καταστρώματος) and two crew members were also arrested. On the pier there was a suitcase and some items that no one had previously looked for. The port guards took the belongings, believing that they could belong to the deceased man.

As part of the preliminary investigation, according to the Ministry of Shipping, the Central Authority of the Port of Piraeus will receive statements about the incident from eyewitnesses and crew. The company changed crew and today the ship left for Crete five minutes before 4 am, writes CNN Greece.

“I express my regret over the tragic incident in the port of Piraeus, which resulted in the death of a person. The Piraeus Port Authority is taking all necessary steps to clarify the situation and allocate responsibility”, — stated in the post of the Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Miltiadis Varvitsiotis.
