Crete: the police became interested in the priest for "left" antique icons

Under the microscope of the police authorities was a priest from the parish of the city of Heraklion on the island of Crete, as, according to available information, they found ancient icons that were not registered, and large sums of money.

According to a local news outlet Cretaliveit all started a few months ago when, using relevant information about “strange packages received mainly through courier services”, the police launched an investigation both at the church where he is the parish priest and at the house where he lives.

According to the information received, unregistered icons were found in the church, which were confiscated in order to determine whether they fall under the law on antiquities.

At the same time, in the priest’s house, in another part of the interior, a large amount of money was found, about 150-170 thousand euros. The money was reportedly found hidden in pots and pans of food!

The icons, according to the information, were examined by experts from the Ephorate of Antiquities of Heraklion, who found that they are indeed very ancient. Now it turns out how they ended up in the church of this priest, and the origin of the cash that was hidden in his house is being established.

The case materials are currently being formed, and further developments are expected.
