Rubiales’ scandalous kiss after winning the Women’s World Cup final could cost him his career.
Luis Rubiales, president of the Spanish Football Federation, could be banned from football for 15 years. Football officials criticized him for kissing soccer player Jenny Hermoso on the lips after the final match. Rubiales speaks of mutual agreement, the athlete objects and says that this is not so.
Regional officials of the Spanish Federation, following a five-hour meeting in Madrid, called on Luis Rubiales to resign immediately – FIFA could remove him from football for 15 years.
Angry protests from women in support of Hermoso have swept across Spain, alleging that she was the victim of sexual violence. Spanish soccer players are on strike.
The Spanish prosecutor’s office is conducting a preliminary investigation to establish the presence of corpus delicti. Labor Minister Yolanda Diaz says:
“We are demanding that sports organizations be updated to reflect the reality of our time, that we have an egalitarian and feminist policy, and above all, we are working to ensure that we never see the like of Jenny Hermoso again. Therefore, we all together with Jenny. “Enough!” is a collective “Enough”. Our country is actually better than the one we have seen it these days.”
On Saturday, the International Football Federation suspended Rubiales from office for 90 days, while conducting a disciplinary investigation. According to British media, FIFA may excommunicate him from football for 15 years.
