The authorities of Rome accused tourists of hordes of rats that filled the Colosseum

A popular attraction in the Italian capital, the Colosseum is literally teeming with rats. Tourists are to blame, authorities say.

In addition to rats, the Colosseum was filled with rubbish from numerous tourists, writes CNN Greece and the authorities of Rome are taking emergency measures to combat the problem.

Tourists post numerous videos of rodents scurrying around the monument on social media, but authorities continue to reproach visitors who leave rubbish behind. The heat exacerbates the situation even more.

Sabrina Alfonsi, head of Rome’s waste collection service, says the rats are attracted to piles of waste – the remains of “snacks” and other garbage. Over the weekend, he was taken out of the territory of the Colosseum, and from Monday, August 28, the authorities are stepping up measures to combat the problem. The intervention of the Directorate for Environmental Protection will cover both shelters in green areas immediately adjacent to the Coliseum Archaeological Park and interventions in street wells.

In Rome, according to official estimates, there are about 7 million rats, that is, about two and a half rodents for every inhabitant. On summer evenings, omnivorous rats can often be seen throughout the city, scurrying between sidewalks and garbage cans.

Previously, our publication reported that Paris has a similar problem.. Brand new garbage cans on the streets of Paris, death traps, thorough cleaning of the streets – alas, the authorities are clearly losing in the fight against rats. One thing remains – to learn to live with rodents peacefully, in a good neighborly way. Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of the French capital, under criticism for his inability to deal with the rats running through the streets, creates a working group on “living together” with these animals. This was announced on June 8 by her health assistant and told the newspaper Le Figaro:

“There is a question about cohabitation. Recently, the mayor and I also decided to form a committee on (…) this cohabitation. To be as efficient as possible and to ensure a normal life, so that it is not unbearable for the Parisians.”
