The regional authorities of Chalkidiki have decided to temporarily ban swimming on part of the Nikiti beach in the municipality of Sithonia due to problems with biological wastewater treatment.

The decision was made for precautionary reasons. the results of the microbiological analysis of the sea water of the beach went beyond the permissible limits.

The authorities are recommending that signs saying “No bathing” be placed in a designated area administered by the Municipality of Sithonia and that the public be informed.

It is required to send data on the restoration (repair) of the biological treatment plants of the plant to the competent Department of Public Health and Welfare of the regional division of Halkidiki, followed by the presentation of the results of analyzes (laboratory studies) of wastewater entering the sea.

“The results of microbiological analyzes of sea water in the period 07.28-08.09.2023 go beyond the permissible limits and make it unsuitable for swimming,” the message says, among other things. The Coast Guard is tasked with monitoring the implementation of the ban.

As specified, the problem arose due to a malfunction of the biological wastewater treatment system (sewerage). Deputy Governor Katerina Zografu noted that “this is a complex problem, however, as the tourist season continues, it was deemed necessary to carry out appropriate work to eliminate the threat to the health of citizens.”
