Milk in Greece and the EU: price comparison


Greek consumers still pay a high price for dairy products compared to the rest of Europe, although the prices of fresh milk, yogurt and butter have fallen in seven months of this year on the shelves of domestic supermarkets.

However, these minor reductions of the order of 2-2.3% seem to have gone unnoticed. At the same time, prices began to rise again, despite the fact that manufacturers lowered them.

As can be seen from the analytical data of the Hellenic Statistical Office (ELSTAT), in the seventh month of this year, prices for fresh milk, both whole and reduced fat, fell by 2.25%. For yoghurts over the same period, the decline was 2.36%, and the decline in prices for butter was about 0.05%.

According to experts, for 26 months food inflation continues to “strangle” family budgets. The price of raw milk increased by 26.42% between June 2021 and July 2023, according to ELSTAT.

It is significant that in the first half of this year prices for yogurt decreased by 3.34%, while the price decrease for fresh milk was about 2.64%, and for butter – 1.71%.

The upward trend in prices is also reflected data from the European Statistical Office (Eurostat). In particular, in July the price of fresh milk in Greece increased by 9.9% year on year, exceeding the growth at the level of the Eurozone (+8.4%) and the European Union (+8.9%), yogurt by 11.4% and cream cheese. oil by 7.4%.

However, the largest increase in prices in the category of dairy products is observed in cheese: by 16.9% year on year, which is higher than the growth recorded in Germany (+13.8%), Spain (+12.7%), Portugal (+10. 4%) and Italy (+10.7%). In general, at the level of the eurozone +13.6%.

According to the dairy industry, the decline in the cost of fresh milk, yoghurts and butter is due to the “pacification of prices” of producers for cow’s milk, a trend that began in the last quarter of 2022 in Western Europe and has spread to domestic markets since the beginning of this year.

But this is not the case for cheeses. Since in their preparation, in most cases, goat and sheep milk are used, the price of which has not decreased at the level of raw materials. The paradox, however, is that Producer prices continue to fall, while prices for consumers continue to rise. at least according to official data for July this year.

In particular, according to the latest data from the European Milk Market Observatory, the average price of a cow’s milk producer in our country in June this year was 49.9 euro cents, a decrease of 4% compared to the corresponding price a year ago. In July, according to the same agency, the average price of a cow’s milk producer fell even further, to 49.5 euro cents.
