In deserted Athens burglars roamed

Knowing full well that a large number of citizens, and entire families, had left the city for vacation, burglaries became more frequent – the robbers set their sights on empty apartments.

Broken windows, smashed doors and upside-down furnishings are all images of vandalism that many families face when they return home. In the summer months, the number of burglaries increases, as empty apartments and houses greatly facilitate the work of criminals.

“They broke the lock and took everything and also stole my brother’s car from an open parking lot. They smashed everything, tore the mattresses,” Ms. Sophia tells the reporters of the MEGA channel. Her cousins experienced fear and horror when burglars broke into their home while they were inside. The only recourse they had at that moment was to pretend they were asleep.

“They went through the neighboring balcony and opened the balcony door while the children were inside and pretended to be asleep so that nothing bad would happen,” the worried woman says.

According to police, the robbers are checking to see if the house has an alarm, a security camera and a pet. Letters and flyers piled up in the mailbox indicate that the tenants have been away for several days. Ms. Natalia was on vacation when burglars broke into her home and also broke into neighbors’ homes.

According to experts, also boxes from new household appliances in nearby trash cans (laptops or TVs) also attract robbers. In addition, complete darkness, when there is no light, facilitates their work.
