DW: “The war in Ukraine will last until 2025”

According to the poll, 52% of Germans oppose sending Taurus missiles to Kyiv. At the same time, according to estimates, the war could end by 2025.

More than half of Germans do not agree with sending long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine, which are considered the latest weapon system because they are capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 500 km. The new data comes from the latest “Political Barometer” survey conducted for the public TV channel ZDF.

If we analyze its results, then the majority of citizens who oppose the plans of the German government, obviously, are the voters of the “green”: 68% of them oppose the supply of these German-Swedish missiles to Kiev. However, the opinions of the voters of the Social Democrats Olaf Scholz and the voters of the opposition parties – Christian Democrats and Christian Socialists – were divided.

It is also interesting to note that in West Germany the disagreement of citizens with the possible supply of weapons of this level is 40%, compared with 21% in the East German states.

Will the US elections decide the end of the war? ANDinteresting are the assessments of the leading German military analyst Gustav Gressel from the European Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin regarding the end of the war in Ukraine. As he stated in an interview with tagesschau.de, everything currently indicates that “the war will definitely last until 2025.” For him, the US presidential election in November 2024 is crucial.

“From Russia’s perspective, if Donald Trump wins, he could offer a deal in January 2025. So spring 2025 would be the earliest end point for this war on Russia’s terms. If Joe Biden wins, which currently seems more likely , then the war will continue after 2025,” Gressel said.

In his opinion, both Russia and Ukraine really want an end to the war, but apparently they have a diametrically opposed perception of reality. “Russia is still fighting for the complete destruction of Ukraine as an independent state and is not negotiating about anything else. On the other hand, Ukraine talks about the war for independence and seeks recognition from Russia of its existence as an independent state.”

With regard to consultations at the European and international level about the end of the war, according to the military analyst, “a lot of time was wasted on meaningless discussions.” To Vladimir Putin, Western democracies look “weak” and “split”. And, in his words, “neither from Washington nor from Berlin there are no signs that would shake this conviction.”
