"The music played for a while…" Refugees being evicted from Bibby Stockholm due to bacteria

UK asylum seekers being evacuated from Bibby Stockholm barge due to Legionella*.

Just a few days ago, the first 39 refugees settled on a comfortable, judging by the frames of the video, barge. Their settlement was the result of the British government’s efforts to reduce the cost of maintaining the growing number of people seeking asylum in the country.

However, on a barge docked in the south of England, a potential home for 500 migrants, environmental samples showed Legionella bacteria in the water supply. IN statement British Home Office says:

“As a precautionary measure, all 39 asylum seekers who boarded the ship this week are being disembarked while further assessments are being conducted. None of the people on board showed symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease, and appropriate advice and support is being provided to asylum seekers.”

Plans to use Bibby Stockholm as housing for asylum seekers were met with controversy and delays, with opponents expressing concerns about the safety and advisability of housing people fleeing war and persecution in such cramped conditions.

*legionella bacteria commonly found in damp and humid environments. The optimal temperature range at which these bacteria form is between 35 and 46°C, so they usually thrive in water at 30–50°C. There are many different types of Legionella bacteria, and not all of them cause disease in humans. Legionella bacteria can cause two illnesses in humans: legionellosis, an infection that causes pneumonia, and Pontiac fever, which resembles an acute form of the flu.
