New shipwreck off Lampedusa – at least 41 dead migrants

Several dozen migrants have drowned in a new deadly shipwreck off the coast of Italy. At least 41 people have now died as a result of the accident off the island of Lampedusa, according to the BBC, citing testimonies of survivors.

On Tuesday morning, August 8, in the sea area of Falconera Island in Myrtoos Pelagos (southern Aegean Sea), the Greek authorities carried out a rescue operation for about 50 migrants.

An endless drama is also played out on the island of Rhodes, where, after devastating fires, hordes of illegal immigrants continue to land regularly.

More than 200 refugees and migrants are found crossing a bridge on the Arda River in Evros on Friday 4 August in the morning. Most of them are women with babies in their arms, children, pregnant women, children with Down syndrome, there is also a person with epilepsy and an adult with artificial limbs.

According to the Italian news agency Ansa, the four survivors reported that their ship left the Tunisian city of Sfax towards the Italian coast. The port of Sfax, located 130 km from Lampedusa, is a popular destination for migrants seeking a better life in Europe, according to Tunisian authorities.

The survivors were picked up by a Maltese freighter and handed over to the Italian Coast Guard. In recent days, Italian patrol boats and charity groups have rescued some 2,000 people who arrived in Lampedusa.

On Sunday, the Italian coast guard reported two more shipwrecks in which about 30 people were missing. And on Monday, Tunisian authorities said they found 11 dead bodies near Sfax.

About 93,700 illegal migrants have arrived in Italy by sea since the beginning of the year, compared with 44,700 during the same period last year, according to the Italian Ministry of the Interior.

The Coast Guard was informed of the immobilization of the ship, and other boats passing by Milos rushed to the scene. Rescue coordinators also arrived in a Coast Guard helicopter. As it became known, some migrants who were on a shipwrecked ship managed to swim to the shore. The rest are on the ship waiting for the Coast Guard.

This is also evidenced by today’s video, which shows how a resident of the island is driving a car in the Kamiros area and suddenly, in front of his eyes, dozens of illegal immigrants leave the beach and head inland. This calls into question the actions of the authorities and the orders of their political leadership.

The scene seems to repeat the one that occurred on July 2, when dozens of dressed Africans suddenly began to appear among unsuspecting bathers on the beach of Tsampika in Rhodes in the middle of the day.
