Ecuador: presidential candidate killed at campaign rally

Fernando Villavicencio, a 59-year-old presidential candidate, was shot dead during a campaign rally in Quito, Ecuador’s capital.

How informs CNN Greece, the politician’s death was confirmed by his personal friend, campaign adviser Dr. Carlos Figueroa. He said that Villavicencio’s death followed three shots to the head:

“When they examined him, he no longer showed signs of life. He was taken to a clinic, where he was declared dead.”

The daily newspaper El Universo writes, citing a report by the Ecuadorian prosecutor general’s office, that nine people were wounded in the attack, including two policemen and a parliamentary candidate.

The alleged perpetrator of the murder was critically injured after a shootout with security personnel present at the scene, the newspaper writes:

“After his arrest, he was first taken to the court in Quito, and from there, apparently, he was transferred to a medical center, where doctors confirmed his death.”

Fernando Villavicencio, a member of the country’s national assembly, was attacked as he left an event in the northern city of Quito on Wednesday. A member of his campaign team told local media that Villavicencio was getting into his car when a man stepped forward and shot him in the head. Current President Guillermo Lasso has vowed that “the crime will not go unpunished,” quotes Air Force.

The first round of presidential elections is scheduled for August 20. Mr Lasso, who will not participate in them, said he was “outraged and shocked” by the killing, adding: “Organized crime has come a long way, but the brunt of the law will fall on them.”
