Latin American Themis: El Salvador will arrange judgment day (video)

Notorious for crime, El Salvador is preparing to arrange a doomsday for mafia authorities: mass trials will take place simultaneously over 900 criminals.

How tells BB.LV, even the NKVD could envy such a record:

“El Salvador will hold mass trials of 900 gangsters with the same charge. More than 70,000 people have been arrested over the long lockdown period and the government is now moving towards mass trials of 900 accused mobsters with the same verdict at the same time. 70,000 people have been arrested since President Nayib Bukele declared a state of emergency 16 months ago. The mass arrests that occurred during the lockdown have reportedly led to a reduction in the number of homicides. These mass arrests seem to have had an impact on the president’s popularity as well.”

Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele recently opened a new “mega-prison” with a capacity of 40,000 prisoners as part of his plan to crack down on street gangs in the country, according to the London Daily Star. The new prison was named “Terrorist Detention Center”. It has 8 buildings, each with 32 cameras. The guard consists of more than 1000 employees of the prison department, 600 military personnel and 250 police officers.

When fully filled, the prison will become the largest in the world in terms of the number of prisoners. El Salvador currently holds between 70,000 and 100,000 prisoners, making the country the world’s leader in the number of prisoners per 100,000 population.

El Salvador is a small country in Central America with a population of over 6.5 million people. It has faced high crime rates for many years. The country’s murder rate is one of the highest in the world. More than 2,000 murders are recorded in El Salvador in a year – more than 29 murders per 100,000 inhabitants per year.
