Kallithea: while opening the gates of the playground, an employee of the municipality died of heat stroke


In the middle of Sunday afternoon, July 23, an employee of the municipality of Kallithea went to open a playground and lost consciousness.

All the efforts of the doctors were useless – a 49-year-old man died of heat stroke. As it turned out, the employee of the municipality had serious health problems, and heat wavewhich swept over Greece, turned out to be fatal for the father of an orphaned 16-year-old teenager.

How informs kallitheacity.com, the man belonged to a vulnerable group, having serious chronic ailments. At 4:45 pm, he came to the playground located between Spartis and Pericleous streets to open it for citizens with children. Having opened the first entrance, he walked through the area about 50 meters to the second, however, trying to open the gate, he collapsed to the ground unconscious, eyewitnesses say.

The team arrived a few minutes later ΕΚΑΒ, at about 17:15, could not bring the man back to life, although they used all possible means – artificial respiration and an automatic defibrillator. The man, accompanied by the brother of the deceased who came to the scene, was taken by ambulance to Λαϊκό Νοσοκομείο, where doctors pronounced him dead from cardiac arrest associated with heat stroke.

The worker had several health problems and belonged to a vulnerable group – the man lost one eye, had heart problems and was overweight, and was taking heavy medication.

The mayor of Kallithea, Dimitris Karnavos, ordered a preliminary investigation to clarify the circumstances under which the tragedy occurred. The municipality’s announcement reads:

“Due to the tragic death of our 49-year-old EPA employee on Sunday, July 23, 2023, Kallithea Mayor Dimitris Karnavos ordered a preliminary investigation to clarify the circumstances of the incident. We express our deepest condolences to the family of our deceased employee. The municipality of Kallithea has complied with all the circular instructions of the competent ministries and has taken emergency measures to deal with extreme weather events.”
