Corfu: increased fires in the northern part of the island. Fire rages uncontrollably in Rhodes

It looks like there is still a long way to go before the fires are under control in Corfu, as the fires intensified last night and the fire took over new areas. The situation in Rhodes is far from improving, where firefighters are still unable to bring the fire under control.

In Corfu, the main source of fire is located in the areas of Viglaturi, Peritia and Lavka, while not threatening residential areas. Before sunset, air assistance was essential to contain the fire front.

In particular, one Augusta Bell helicopter, two Ukrainian firefighting aircraft and two PZL aircraft worked in the air. By noon, firefighters’ first estimate was 25,000 acres of burned land.

This is the 7th day of the catastrophic fire on the island of Rhodes, which burned at least 110 thousand acres of forest land. Efforts are centered around the villages of Malonas and Massari, where a large force of firefighters and volunteer groups are fighting to stop the fire from spreading to other forested areas. The conditions under which the struggle is fought are extremely difficult: storm winds blow in the area of the fire.

In the village of Vati, firefighters and volunteers have been working since the second half of the day, in other sectors of the front – from Apollo to Laerma – fires have resumed. Recall that in the midday hours, new pockets of fire appeared, which quickly gained strength. Therefore, the residents of the villages of Gennadi, Vati, Masari, Malonas and Kalathos were notified by a message on the number 112 so that they could evacuate in a safe direction.

Firefighting planes and helicopters participated in extinguishing the fire until sunset.
