The European Union plans permanent joint purchases of non-Russian gas

EU wants to jointly purchase non-Russian gas on a permanent basis, which was used as an anti-crisis measure during the period of refusal of Russian imports.

How informs Bloomberg, referring to the document of the European Commission, the EU executive authority proposes to make this a long-term solution and continue not to buy Russian gas.

These measures, as outlined in the document, could include other energy goods or services such as carbon capture and storage, a process that involves separating carbon from industrial and energy sources, as well as transporting it to a storage site and long-term sequestering it from the atmosphere.

Participation in the joint procurement platform is expected to be voluntary. Although in the event of another energy crisis, the EU may go to the formation of a common demand.

Maros Šefčović, Vice President of the EC, stressed that the platform could also enable the purchase of hydrogen and serve as a model for the procurement of critical raw materials needed for clean technologies. According to the document, this proposal will be included in the hydrogen and decarbonization package currently being discussed by member states and the European Parliament.

Earlier, the EU announced that it was able to overcome dependence on Russian energy, thanks to the EU plan to reduce gas consumption by 15%. He began to operate in the EU in August last year to deal with the gas crisis due to the Russian war.

This year, the EC decided to invite member countries to voluntarily continue to reduce gas consumption by 15% in the future.
