The court in the case of Mati will wait for the removal of the immunity of the deputy

An Athens court on Monday adjourned an appeal for compensation filed by 11 people who suffered serious burns in the deadly 2018 wildfire in Mati (East Attica).

Consideration of the case postponed until 30 October, pending the removal of immunity from prosecution from SYRIZA MP Rena Duru, who at the time of the fire was the governor of the Attica region and is one of the key defendants in the case.

On Monday, the trial was held on the basis of case files collected after it became clear that 11 victims had escaped the attention of the main trial in the Mati fire case, which focused on 104 people who died in the fire.

As with this trial, 21 officials are expected to be held accountable for the government’s late response at the fall court hearing. René Duuro, who was elected to parliament on June 25, waived her right to immunity and asked the House to expedite the process. MPs are due to discuss the issue on Tuesday.
